11 Reasons Your Website Isn’t Converting Enquiries Into Clients

Traffic without enquiries usually comes down to a handful of fixable problems. Here are the ones we see most.

Most “our website isn’t working” conversations start in the wrong place. The instinct is to buy more traffic: more ads, more SEO, more social posts. But if the site already gets visitors and the phone still isn't ringing, more traffic just means more people bouncing off the same handful of problems. Here are the problems we come across most often.

The eleven reasons

01

There's no clear next step above the fold

A visitor lands, reads a headline, and has to hunt for what to do next. If the call to action isn't obvious in the first screen, on a phone, without scrolling, most people won't go looking for it. They'll just leave.

02

The phone number isn't tappable

On desktop this doesn't matter. On mobile, where many enquiries start, a phone number that's just text instead of a tel: link means someone has to copy, switch apps, and paste. Plenty won't bother.

03

Enquiries land in an inbox nobody checks after 5pm

The best enquiries often arrive outside office hours, when someone finally has a quiet minute to deal with the thing they've been putting off. If nothing responds until the next working day, a chunk of those people have already contacted someone else by the time you see the message.

04

The proof is buried at the bottom

Reviews, case studies and recognisable client names help move someone from “maybe” to “enquiry”. Pushing all of it below a long scroll of features means most visitors never see it at all.

05

The form asks for too much, too soon

Every extra field is a reason to abandon. A first enquiry needs a name, a way to reach them, and maybe one qualifying question. Everything else can wait for the actual conversation.

06

It's slow on mobile data, not just slow on office wifi

A site that feels instant on a fast office connection can feel painfully slow on a phone with three bars of signal. That gap is exactly where a lot of visitors give up before the page has even finished loading.

07

There's no answer to “why you, not the competitor”

Someone comparing two or three options in open tabs needs a reason to pick one. If every option in front of them reads the same, generic and interchangeable, the decision often comes down to whichever one happens to reply first.

08

Nobody replies outside office hours

This is the after-hours problem from a different angle: not just where enquiries land, but whether anything actually answers them. A site that can only respond during the working day is only open for enquiries during the working day.

09

Nobody has actually used it one-handed, in a rush, on a phone

Most site reviews happen sitting at a desk, clicking through calmly. Most real visits happen one-handed, half-distracted, deciding in seconds whether to keep going. Those two experiences are rarely the same site.

10

Testimonials are an afterthought, not evidence

A single generic quote with no name attached does very little. Specific, verifiable detail, named clients who have agreed to be named, and a photo or logo where permitted all read as real. Real is what reduces someone’s hesitation. Invented proof does the opposite the moment anyone checks.

11

There's no fallback for the AI assistants doing the research now

Some buyers now ask an AI assistant for recommendations before they visit any website. Those assistants draw on pages they can find and understand. If your services are described vaguely, or hidden in images and scripts, you give them little to work with. Our guide to AI search visibility covers what helps.

Frequently asked questions

01How do I know which of these is actually costing me the most?

It depends on where the traffic already comes from and how it currently behaves. Looking at the real analytics and walking through the site on a phone usually narrows the list to a few that matter.

02Do I need a full rebuild to fix this?

Not always. Some of these are an afternoon's fix. Others, like a site that was never structured to convert or to be read by AI assistants, genuinely need a rebuild to solve properly rather than patch.

03How fast can these be fixed?

Some are quick. Others depend on how the site is built and how much content needs rewriting. Larger work is scoped and priced up front, with the timeline agreed as part of the scope.
